In early 2014 some of the most credible young DJs in the world started playing a series of remixes in their live sets. Skream, Cashmere Cat, Diplo, Ryan Hemsworth, Star Slinger, Wave Racer, Cosmo’s Midnight, RL Grime and others started playing these otherwise unheard of remixes. Crowds erupted and led to numerous bootleg live recordings of the remixes; giving an almost folklore-eque quality to them. But where were these remixes coming from? Who was creating them? Why were such high-quality DJs playing them? And why were they not available anywhere online?
Through friendships built online, Lido had been sending his ideas and eventually writing with some of these DJs – who in turn sent it to their other DJ friends to play in their sets -effectively co-signing the new Norwegian producer. He had also begun to release other music through another lauded pseudonym (can you guess it?) that was equally mysterious and trippy.
This EP – led by the single of the same name – is the first release to feature original music of Lido’s. It is being released on Pelican Fly, the cult Franco-Belgian label that introduced the world to the likes of frequent Lido collaborator Cashmere Cat.
At 21 years old Lido is one of the key faces of a new generation reinventing the perception of electronic music and that of its producers. Not just another DJ playing a cheese-pop track penned by a faceless writer with their stamp of approval, but a legitimate writing talent with a number of production credits for other artists. After several years of an often toxic landscape dominated by the prevailing ‘EDM’ zeitgeist it’s a refreshing change.
