Think you know Anthony Callea?

Think again.

“Break all of the rules,” Anthony declares in his new single, Oh Oh Oh Oh.

A pulsating piece of dance pop, it’s the sound of an artist who’s embracing his independence and loving life.

Anthony wrote Oh Oh Oh Oh with DJ Poet, who is best known for his work with The Black Eyed Peas.

“I went to Poet’s studio in LA,” Anthony explains. “He is seriously loopy, and I say that in a good way. For him, it’s all about the music. I loved working with him – I could just feed off his energy.”

A creative spark was ignited between Anthony and DJ Poet. “‘Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh’ popped out in the chorus,” Anthony says. “I said to Poet, ‘Can we really use that as a lyric and the title?’ And he said, ‘Why not?’”

It sums up Anthony’s approach to making music – there are no boundaries.

With Oh Oh Oh Oh, Anthony fuses a ’70s disco vibe with modern pop and R&B, while exploring a new vocal sound. Everyone knows he can nail the ‘big note’. With Oh Oh Oh Oh, Anthony treats his vocals as just another instrument. “I wanted a track where every element complemented each other, where the vocals are interwoven with the music.”

Part electro, part retro, it’s fun and a little bit cheeky, with a killer hook that’ll stay in your head for days. An energy lifting celebration, think thumping summer dance floors and irresistible beats that get your heart racing. A lively mix of electronic drum beats, synth sounds, and a disco build of electrifying strings, Oh Oh Oh Oh delivers heavy bass and horns into a chorus that gets you on your feet. “I’m in the moment,” Anthony sings.

Oh Oh Oh Oh showcases Anthony’s evolution as a musician. Like most artists, Anthony’s first experiences with music have influenced his style, such as his love of euro-dance pop in his teenage years. Now in his 20s, progressive inspirations have developed from interactions within the Australian and international music scene. Anthony’s own personal growth has also fuelled a depth and realism that shine through his lyrics.

Anthony has spent the past couple of years travelling and writing songs. “It’s been really refreshing working with people overseas who had no idea who I was or where I’d come from. Of course, it can also be a little scary, because you’re vulnerable when you’re exposing yourself in a writing situation. But if you’re as honest as possible, it can work.”

Since he was introduced to Australian television audiences, Anthony has headlined his own national tours, while also being handpicked to tour with Whitney Houston, Diana Ross and Celine Dion. In addition to winning an ARIA Award for his rendition of The Prayer, which became the fastest and highest selling Australian single of all time, he has maintained his position as one of Australia’s most established entertainers. In recent years he has starred in theatre productions Wicked, Rent and Dead Man Walking, as well as appearing in the Seven Network’s It Takes Two and Foxtel’s Ultimate School Musical: Fame.

“It’s been really valuable exploring other sides of the industry,” Anthony says. “But I never stopped writing.”

Oh Oh Oh Oh is the first taste of what’s to come from Anthony Callea.

Just leave your preconceptions at the door.
