The Merindas are Candice Lorrae of Jawoyn and Thursday Islander heritage (born in Darwin Northern Territory), and Nyoongar Ballardong Whadjuk woman Kristel Kickett (from Tammin Western Australia). They discovered their mutual passion for music in Perth over 7 years ago but are now based in Melbourne.
The Merindas are currently making a name for themselves as one of the most electrifying live acts in Australia. They describe their unique sound as electronic pop, with a lot of harmony and dancehall feel alongside afrobeat’s, hip-hop with R&B influences.
Their new single “Before Daylightâ€, is full of vibrant hooks and flawless sassy vocals inspired by a traditional Noongar dreaming story called “Bimban Born-Kissing Treesâ€. It's about a man and woman who were forbidden to be together. The lyrics “Before Daylightâ€, give me one last kiss goodbye' describes the couples last moments embraced in each other’s arms. Their love was so strong it grew in harmony with the land through two trees. These trees grew side by side with their branches touching symbolising their last kiss.
Speaking about their new single Candice and Kristel say, “Before Daylight†is our first release that has a story of its own and is close to our hearts. It's taken on many shapes and forms over the years because we wanted it to be perfect. For us, it's a strong representation of where we are now and how much we've both grown as artists and writers. We are so excited it's finally being released into the world".
The Merindas have achieved incredible success over the past 7 years supporting some of Australia’s biggest stars including Jessica Mauboy, Mojo Juju, Dan Sultan, and international Grammy Award winner artist Brandy. Don’t miss these soul sisters as they trail-blaze their innovative style of Indigenous music on tour in November.Â
